The Call That Won’t Let You Sit Still

As leaders, we're often faced with a call that challenges our comfort zones. Just like Jesus' directive in Matthew 28, our mission isn't limited by job titles or confined spaces. Whether guiding a team or building a business, every interaction is an opportunity to live purposefully and courageously. Are you ready to embrace the mantle and see your daily steps as sacred ground for leadership?

The Call That Won’t Let You Sit Still

There are moments in life when you hear a call so big, so weighty, you realize you’ll never be able to live the same way again. That’s exactly what Jesus did in Matthew 28:19-20. Standing on a mountain after His resurrection, He looks at this ragtag group of disciples, fishermen, tax collectors, doubters, and hands them the keys to the kingdom. “Go and make disciples of all nations… and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

That moment wasn’t just a religious directive. It was a redefinition of purpose. It was Jesus saying, “I’m not leaving you here to play it safe. I’m sending you out to live with mission, with intention, with courage.” And if we’re honest, that same tension presses into our lives today.

The question is this: are we going to sit comfortably, or are we going to live sent?

The Myth of Someone Else’s Job

One of the most dangerous lies in both faith and business is the belief that mission is for “someone else.” In church, we assume it’s for pastors, missionaries, or those “gifted” in evangelism. In business, we assume it’s for the sales team, the marketing department, or leadership.

But Jesus didn’t qualify the Great Commission with job titles. He gave it to everyone.

That means the mom juggling schedules is a disciple-maker in her home. The manager guiding a team is discipling through their leadership. The entrepreneur building a company is shaping lives as much as products. Every human interaction becomes a chance to either reflect Jesus or shrink back into self-preservation.

If you’ve been waiting for someone else to pick up the mantle, here’s the truth: the mantle has already been placed on your shoulders.

The Power of “Go”

The word go in the original text isn’t only about hopping on a boat and heading to foreign lands. It carries the sense of as you are going. In other words, Jesus is saying, “Wherever your feet take you, there your mission lives.”

Think about it. Your neighborhood, your office, your Zoom calls, your lunch breaks, these are not interruptions to mission; they are the mission field itself. Too often, we compartmentalize: church over here, business over there, family somewhere in between. Jesus destroys those walls. He ties purpose to presence.

Every step you take becomes an opportunity. Every hallway conversation becomes sacred ground.

Apprenticeship, Not Conversion

Jesus didn’t say, “Go and get people to sign on the dotted line.” He said, “Make disciples.” The Greek word matheteuo is about apprenticing. It’s slow, relational, and messy. It’s teaching people to walk in a new way of life, not just nod their head to a belief.

Think about how you train a new employee. You don’t toss them a manual and hope they figure it out. You walk with them, explain context, model the behavior, and invite questions. That’s discipleship. Now translate that into faith, leadership, parenting, or mentoring, and suddenly the Great Commission looks less like a burden and more like the most human invitation possible.

What if we approached every role in life this way? Not just hiring staff, but shaping people. Not just selling products, but investing in lives.

That’s the difference between making a living and making an impact.

Baptism and Belonging

Jesus included baptism in the Commission for a reason. Baptism is more than ritual; it’s about identity. It marks someone as belonging to the family of God. And belonging, whether in faith or in business, is always the soil where flourishing grows.

In your company, people may not be stepping into water, but they are asking the same question: Do I belong here? Am I seen? Do I matter?

When you create spaces of belonging, you’re not just checking a box for culture. You’re doing kingdom work. You’re showing people their worth isn’t tied to output alone. That’s discipleship disguised as leadership.

The Promise That Changes Everything

Here’s the part of the Great Commission that often gets overlooked: “I am with you always.” Jesus doesn’t call us to a mission and then leave us to figure it out. He promises His presence every step of the way.

That changes everything. When the project falls apart, when the client walks away, and when the family conversation explodes into conflict, you’re not carrying the mission alone. His presence is the fuel that sustains you, the courage that steadies you, the voice that whispers, “Keep going. I’m still here.”

The Cost of Playing Small

Let’s face it, living sent is risky. It asks you to show up differently in your workplace, your relationships, and your community. It asks you to speak when silence feels safer, to invest when convenience would be easier, to see people as eternal souls rather than transactional contacts.

And that can be uncomfortable. But the greater danger is what happens when we play small. When we choose comfort over calling, we shrink not only our impact but our joy. The Great Commission isn’t about obligation; it’s about invitation. Jesus is inviting us into the adventure of aligning our lives with His heart for the world.

And adventure always costs something.

Where Mission Meets Monday

So how do we actually live this out? Start by dropping the idea that mission is an add-on to your life. Instead, weave it into the fabric of what you already do.

  • In your personal life, identify one person who has helped you grow spiritually. Then ask, “Who can I be that person for now?”
  • In your professional life, look at your team not just as employees, but as disciples in formation. How are you modeling patience, integrity, courage, and vision?
  • In your community: ask God to open your eyes to one neighbor, one barista, one stranger whose story you might intersect with today.

It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing what you already do, with mission stitched into every move.

Living Sent

The Great Commission isn’t a footnote. It’s the headline. It’s the invitation that redefines our calendars, our conversations, and our careers. Jesus never called His followers to sit safely in sanctuaries or comfortable offices. He called us to go, to make disciples, to baptize into belonging, to teach what He taught, and to do it all with the assurance of His presence.

The truth is, every one of us is living a commission. The only question is whether it’s the Great One.

So here’s the challenge: stop waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect role, or the perfect clarity. You’ve already been sent. The only thing left is to go.

Because the world is waiting for the hope you carry, and Jesus has promised to walk beside you every step of the way.

A Prayer for Living Sent

Father, thank You for trusting us with a mission that is bigger than ourselves. In the middle of our daily lives, in boardrooms, breakrooms, living rooms, and coffee shops, remind us that every space is sacred when You are present. Give us courage to step into conversations we’d rather avoid, patience to walk with others as they grow, and eyes to see the people You’ve already placed in our path.

Lord, strip away the lie that mission belongs only to a chosen few. Help us embrace our role as disciple-makers, not just on Sundays, but in the way we lead teams, raise families, and serve neighbors. Teach us to lead with integrity, to create belonging, and to point people back to You, not by force, but by the way we live and love.

And when the weight feels heavy, remind us of Your promise: “I am with you always.” That truth is our strength, our anchor, and our hope.

Send us out today, Lord, ready to go where You lead, ready to speak with grace, and ready to live with purpose. May we carry Your presence into every corner of life and work.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Take a breath, listen for His whisper, and then step boldly into the mission already waiting in front of you.

Journaling and Reflection

Here are a few reflection questions to lean into:

  1. Where in my everyday life, home, workplace, or community, am I being invited to “go” and live sent, but I’ve been choosing comfort instead of courage?
  2. Who in my world could I begin to intentionally disciple, mentor, or walk alongside, the way others once invested in me?
  3. How can I reframe my professional role, not just as a job, but as a mission field where belonging, integrity, and hope can take root?
