You're always building something.
With every meeting, Slack message, customer call, and, yes, even every dinner table conversation, you're building trust or eroding it. You're creating clarity or adding to the confusion. You're building up your team, your culture, your family, or unknowingly chipping away at the foundation you're standing on.
That's not some abstract concept. It's the daily grind.
And it all boils down to something we often overlook: our words.
I know, I know, sometimes it feels like "just talk." Like venting at the end of a long day. But I've learned, often the hard way, that words are blueprints. They carry weight. They either reinforce the mission or they slowly erode morale.
And as a leader, and let's face it, if you're reading this, you're a leader, whether you've the title or just the influence, you're shaping the atmosphere with every word you speak.
Think of Proverbs 18:21: "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it'll eat its fruit."
It's a powerful thought, right? But let's unpack that, not just for faith, but for everyday impact in our businesses and our lives.
You're Always Representing Something
Let's shift our perspective for a second.
Ever worn a logo tee? Your favorite brand, a sports team, maybe even your company's logo plastered across your chest. When you put that on, you're saying, "This is who I'm with. This is who I represent."
So, if you walk into a room wearing that shirt and start acting like, well, less than your best self, people are judging not just you, but the brand, the team, the organization. I've seen it happen. I've *been* that person.
You're a representative.
Whether you're a business owner staring down payroll, a department lead wrestling with 3 AM worries, a project manager battling imposter syndrome, a coach trying to motivate a team, or a parent setting the tone at home, your words aren't neutral. They reflect something bigger. Something you're tied to. In business, that's your values, your culture, your brand. And, for many of us, it's also a reflection of our faith.
This isn't about striving for perfection. It's about taking ownership.
So, here's the tough question I've had to ask myself: Do my words match the mission I say I'm committed to?
Rotten Fruit or Building Blocks: The Power of Your Speech
Think about it this way.
Imagine building a high-performance culture, a brand people trust, or a family rooted in love, while using materials that are, well, rotten. That's what careless language does. It undercuts the very thing you're trying to build.
Instead, we need to speak words that build others up.
That's not generic praise. That's custom encouragement. Strategic communication. Words that are crafted, not careless.
In business terms? That's emotional intelligence in action. Empathetic leadership. Client-focused messaging. The stuff that sets brands apart and defines high-impact cultures. And, frankly, it's what helps us sleep at night.
The Emotional Wake We Leave Behind
Remember the last time someone tore you down with a single comment? A snide remark. A passive-aggressive email. A harsh critique in front of others?
Still feel that tension in your chest? That's because words leave a mark.
Now flip it.
Think about the last time someone sincerely affirmed you. Called out your potential. Thanked you with tears in their eyes. Or even quietly said, "You matter."
It stayed with you, didn't it?
That's the wake your words leave behind. For your team. Your clients. Your kids. Your spouse. Your followers. Every person who walks away from a conversation with you either walks away heavier or lighter. More empowered or more anxious. And you get to decide which.
So, I've started asking myself: What emotional wake am I leaving?
Leadership Is a Language
This is where life and business truly collide.
In today's world, leaders aren't just managing results; they're shaping culture with every word they say. Company values mean nothing if your hallway talk contradicts them. Mission statements fall flat if your meetings drip with sarcasm, shame, or condescension. I've seen it, and like you, I've probably been guilty of it.
People don't follow charisma, at least not for long. They follow consistency.
So, here's a litmus test I use: If my team adopted my language habits, tone, timing, and content, would the culture improve or worsen?
If my children repeated my words, phrasing, and emotions, would they be more whole or more hurt?
If my clients echoed my voice on social, would they be proud to be associated with my brand?
The Business Case for Grace
You might think this is all too "soft." But don't miss the ROI.
Words build trust. Trust builds loyalty. Loyalty builds legacy.
Words communicate vision. Vision creates buy-in. Buy-in accelerates growth.
Words influence emotion. Emotion drives decisions. And decisions drive revenue.
You want better marketing? Watch your internal language first.
You want stronger sales? Start with words that build confidence, not pressure.
You want a team culture that helps people flourish? Build it with words that empower, not manipulate.
In short, what you say is either branding or breaking.
From Conviction to Action
Let's get real, and let's get personal. I'm right there with you.
Are there patterns in your communication, at home or at work, that need to change?
Are you using humor as a shield for criticism? I know I've.
Are your words passive-aggressive instead of direct and life-giving?
And maybe the hardest one: are there things you've said that you need to own and seek forgiveness for? I know I've had to do that, and it's never easy.
This isn't just a communication strategy. It's soul work.
So, here's the challenge I'm giving myself, and I'm inviting you to join me:
Audit your speech this week. Every meeting. Every interaction. Take mental notes. Where are you building? Where are you breaking?
Apologize where needed. It takes strength, not weakness, to say, "I shouldn't have said that. I'm sorry."
Speak life on purpose. Not flattery, not fake hype, but intentional, customized words that build others up according to their needs.
Final Word: Speak Like a Builder, Live Like a Leader
You're building something.
Whether it's a business, a team, a reputation, a family, or a legacy, you're continually constructing. The question is: What materials are you using?
Rotten words won't hold. Sarcasm won't scale. Gossip won't grow people.
But words filled with truth, encouragement, clarity, and purpose?
Those become steel beams in the skyscraper of your influence.
So, choose your words like an architect chooses materials: with vision, precision, and purpose.
Because, at the end of the day, your words don't just reflect what you do.
They reveal who you're.

Your Morning Prayer
Father God,
Thank you for the power you’ve placed in our words. Today, we surrender our speech to You. Transform our hearts so that what flows from our mouths reflects Your truth, grace, and wisdom.
Help us to be builders of people, culture, and legacy. Teach us to pause before we speak, to listen before we lead, and to talk about life where the world speaks death.
Let every word we speak echo Your love, whether in boardrooms or living rooms.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Journal & Reflection
1. What specific conversations or communications from this past week felt most aligned with your values and vision for your business? How did those interactions impact your team or clients?
2. Think about a recent miscommunication or challenging conversation. What underlying beliefs or assumptions might have contributed to the difficulty? How could you reframe your language or approach in a similar situation in the future?
3. In what areas of your business communication (marketing, internal messaging, customer service) do you sense a disconnect between your intended message and the perceived message? What steps can you take this week to bridge that gap?
4. Consider the "building" metaphor: if your words are bricks, what kind of structure are you consciously trying to create with your communication? How can you ensure each interaction reinforces that vision?
5. Journal for 10 minutes about the legacy you hope your business will leave. How can you intentionally use your words, both internally and externally, to contribute to that legacy, starting today?
