Deep Dive: The 4 Cornerstones
An in-depth look at Love, Purpose, Passion, and Persistence—the foundation of superhuman leadership.
Why Cornerstones?
In construction, cornerstones are the first stones set—everything else is built upon them. If they're off, the whole structure is compromised. The same is true in leadership.
Love: The First Cornerstone
"If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong." (1 Cor 13:1)
Love in leadership means:
- Genuinely caring about your people, not just their productivity
- Making decisions that consider the whole person
- Being willing to have hard conversations for someone's good
- Creating psychologically safe environments
- Celebrating others' wins as genuinely as your own
Warning Signs of Low Love
- Treating people as means to an end
- Impatience with people's growth
- Lack of genuine curiosity about team members' lives
- Quick to criticism, slow to encouragement
Purpose: The Second Cornerstone
"Where there is no vision, the people perish." (Proverbs 29:18)
Purpose in leadership means:
- Clarity on why your organization exists
- Alignment between your work and God's larger story
- Ability to connect daily tasks to meaningful outcomes
- Helping others find their purpose within the larger mission
Warning Signs of Low Purpose
- Going through the motions without conviction
- Difficulty explaining why your work matters
- Team members who don't see how their role connects
- Decisions driven by convenience rather than mission
Passion: The Third Cornerstone
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord." (Col 3:23)
Passion in leadership means:
- Contagious enthusiasm that draws people in
- Energy that sustains through long seasons
- Conviction that makes sacrifice feel worthwhile
- Joy in the work itself, not just the results
Warning Signs of Low Passion
- Dreading Monday mornings
- Going through the motions
- Unable to inspire others about the vision
- Burnout that never fully recovers
Persistence: The Fourth Cornerstone
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Gal 6:9)
Persistence in leadership means:
- Staying committed when results are slow
- Recovering from setbacks with renewed determination
- Maintaining hope in dark seasons
- Finishing what you start
Warning Signs of Low Persistence
- Giving up too quickly on initiatives
- Letting setbacks define the story
- Struggling to get back up after failure
- Chronic initiative-starting without completing
